Work Stress and Sleep
Things have been quiet on Roadtobettersleep.
The reason is in part due to year end activities – Xmas parties, shopping, planning for 2017, short days, long nights, dark winters, endless rainfall in the Pacific Northwest leading to lethargy, and maintaining workplace morale in the presence of top management dismissal.
It’s always a big shock to a team or department when a senior management is let go. When I see the older senior management employees with kids entering university, accustomed to the company expense account, company card, company car, company phone, it’s definitely an adjustment for older people to look for another job when they hadn’t looked for one in say 25 years. Seeing an older employee get the can reminds how I too could be next, and it will suck a lot more as I get older. From a business perspective, letting go of 1 non profit centre with a paycheque equivalent to 2 or 3 junior employees because he’s steadily grown seniority is definitely a more profitable business decision than killing off 2 young, eager to please, malleable beavers/monkeys. For the old guy, it’s a lot harder to find an equivalent position as higher up jobs become sparse the higher you go. You can’t compete with younger blood for more junior roles either who would do the job for way cheaper.
This probably causes a lot of coworkers to lose sleep while worrying about their own paycheque especially as the holiday shopping, and year end bills wrack up.
The best solution to this dilemma of becoming obsolete is to save, invest, and build up as many income streams possible while you’re young, and keep managing it throughout your life. This way, when you get thrown out for being obsolete, at least you’ve built up income generating assets. We can’t stop ourselves from getting old, and being chosen over younger, fresher, leaner meat, but we can proactively build income streams for the future.
While income and cash flow is always a big stress preventing people from better sleep, there’s also the impending holidays around the corner.
During the holiday stress, holiday shopping after work, and fighting for parking space in the mall, it’s important to take time out for yourself so you can be well rested and on top of your game.
